“I had a brilliant couple of days with music students at Falmouth… I learnt as much from them, as they did from me… In fact I’m not sure what they learnt from me, but I had a great time!”
Ed O’Brien (Guitarist, Radiohead)
In scope and scale, the Performance Centre ranks as one of the most sophisticated facilities of its kind in Europe. Located here in Cornwall.
Physically, it is a £19 million assembly of 11 high specification performance and rehearsal studios, 12 practice rooms, an analogue and digital recording studio complex, seminar, exhibition and display spaces.
But it’s not simply a venue. It is a collaboration of world-class thinkers and practitioners, dedicated to delivering our innovative Performance degree programmes in Music, Theatre, Dance, Management and Production. Alongside our performance based public programme, all relocated from Dartington College of Arts following the merger with University College Falmouth in 2008.
Dartington won wide acclaim and the admiration of pioneering practitioners and scholars for a particular teaching philosophy; a holistic approach, embracing inter-disciplinary activity, socially engaged practice, experimentalism and site-specific devised performance. Its legacy is an alumni network spanning the globe. Now that special set of aptitudes and attitudes has been strengthened and invigorated through its integration with UCF’s broader academic portfolio spanning Design, Media, Art and Writing, and the outstanding resources and developing creative community of the Tremough Campus.
In bringing together Dartington and Cornwall, The Performance Centre allies a sense of purpose and shared values with a sense of place. A unique establishment; plugged into the local community, but never parochial – confidently benchmarking itself against and working in collaboration with, the best of its peers internationally.
As a centre of excellence we are lighting a new cultural beacon in Cornwall, complementing other superb performance venues such as the Hall for Cornwall and supporting superlative performance practitioners such as the Kneehigh Theatre company.
The response to great performance is like a dynamo – audience appreciation fuels artistic endeavour, which fuels audience appreciation…We intend to drive that electric sense of wonder and achievement through our programme of events, educational ventures, business engagements, and community partnerships under development locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
